Deleting a WhatsApp account is a permanent action that cannot be undone. Whether you are using the standard WhatsApp Messenger, the WhatsApp Business App, or the WhatsApp Business API, the process varies slightly. This guide walks you through each method so you can remove your number confidently and correctly.
Important Note Before You Start
Once a WhatsApp account is deleted, all associated data is permanently removed. This includes your account information, profile photo, chat history, created channels, and WhatsApp contacts. Deletion is irreversible, so make sure you have backed up any important data before proceeding.
Deleting a WhatsApp App or WhatsApp Business App Account
For users on the standard WhatsApp Messenger or the WhatsApp Business App, the deletion process is straightforward and completed entirely within the mobile application.
Open WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business App on your Android or iPhone device.
Navigate to Settings > Account > Delete my account.
On the Delete my account screen, you have two options: delete the current account permanently or change the phone number linked to the account.
After deleting or changing the phone number, you must wait 3 minutes before you can register or link a new number to another account.
Deleting a WhatsApp Business API Number
The WhatsApp Business API is designed for larger businesses and integrates with CRM and other systems. Deleting a number from the API requires action within Meta’s WhatsApp Manager, not just the mobile app.
Prerequisites
Before you can delete a WhatsApp Business API number, ensure the following conditions are met:
- Administrator Permissions: You must have business admin privileges for the WhatsApp Business Account to delete a phone number.
- 30-Day Paid Message Rule: The number cannot be deleted if it has been used to send any paid messages within the last 30 days. If a paid message was sent during this period, you will be redirected to the Insights page showing the date of the last paid message; you can delete the number 30 days from that date.
- Post-Deletion Contact: After deleting the number from WhatsApp Manager, if you need to remove it from your specific Business Service Provider's system (such as Instadesk), please contact your Business/Service Manager.
Step-by-Step Operation
Follow these steps to delete a WhatsApp Business API number:
Log in to WhatsApp Manager: Access Meta's WhatsApp Manager through your Facebook Business account.
Navigate to Phone Numbers: In the left-hand menu, click to select the Phone numbers menu.
Locate and Delete: In the phone number list, find the WhatsApp number you wish to delete, click the Delete button, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the deletion.
Key Considerations
- Data Loss: Deleting a WhatsApp Business API number permanently removes access to your display name, business profile, Official Business Account (OBA) verification status, messaging tier, quality rating, chat history, and template associations.
- Migration vs. Deletion: If you plan to move the number to another provider, ensure you follow the proper migration steps instead of simply deleting it.
- Re-registration: Once a number is deleted from the WhatsApp Business API, it can never be used as a WhatsApp Business API number with any Business Service Provider (BSP) again. However, it can be used with the regular WhatsApp application or re-registered in the API.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and compliant removal of your WhatsApp accounts across all platforms.
